It's been a crazy busy year between quilting, writing, and helping out at the floral. Plus I have a 2 year old who thinks she rules the world (guess what? She kind of does). So, life has gotten in the way and I'm finding I just don't have enough hours in the day to plan out the posts I want to write and add the pictures and make the blog super cute.</div><div><br></div><div>My solution? I've started posting everything to my Facebook page. Www.facebook.com/designsbylaurajo is where you can find it. Check it out! I try to post as I finish things, but some items (like quilts for Quilt Market or surprise parties, etc) won't be posted until later. I've got them all organized by month, too. Honestly, it's been a lifesaver being able to just quickly upload the photos from my phone.</div><div><br></div><div>Don't worry! I'll still post here on the blog when I can, probably after school gets out. For some reason the end of the school year is when all the parent involve projects seem to happen. My poor 1st grader has been pretty busy. They're having a program in May, and he has a line to memorize. It's easy, for me, but it's a bit if a struggle for him. Add to that reading 20 minutes a night, homework, chores, and then having time to play a little, and my afternoon/evening is shot. I cannot wait for summer. (Ask me in June how many days until school starts and I'll be able to tell you, though! Ha!)</div><div><br></div><div>So, there's my little update. If you want to read more about my writing, check out my Dear Diary series on my author blog: joannapeterson.blogspot.com or you can read updates on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/joannapetersonauthor </div><div><br></div><div>As always, thanks for your continued support! </div><div><br></div><div>XOXO,</div><div><br></div><div>Joanna </div>Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-11452763231656387872013-09-04T08:27:00.000-07:002013-09-04T08:27:54.754-07:00Giveaway Winner!!<div style="text-align: center;">

Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-26699481596775835032013-08-19T15:53:00.004-07:002013-08-19T17:24:22.904-07:00My New Ring - AND - a GIVEAWAY!Hey guys! I know it's been a few weeks since I've blogged. Sorry. It's been CRAZY busy this summer!<br>
<br>
So, a lot's happened lately. I've been quilting up a storm, working on commissioned projects, projects of my own, and writing. I even published a book (my 2nd one comes out August 30th! For more about that, go <a href="http://joannapeterson.blogspot.com/">here</a>.)<br>
<br>
I also was contacted by Diamond Candles to see if I would be willing to try their product, give my honest review, and host a giveaway.<br>
<br>
Have you heard of Diamond Candles before? They have these awesome, all natural soy candles. And the best part? Each candle has a ring hidden inside the wax. Some of the rings aren't worth much, but there's always the chance your candle could have a ring worth up to $5000!!<br>
<br>
So, I picked out the candle I wanted. My husband is really picky about candles (I know, weird, right?), and so I picked a scent that wasn't so much fruity or food-related. They have a lot of really good scents though. If I could have gotten the whole line, I totally would have! I ended up ordering Midnight Kiss.<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEIqnZEGwYPdWL-QiBImGqBUKb78ZOHSplAH__r68sLIw5MimmUBhlj5FN7xBegyDO-s6nryxIRmEDPs5jr9nqzVEbFGMiGmJxeRWlNiSWFiisT559yYHhvHRKmSmcwvSC_oLqWHhvHV0/s1600/photo+10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEIqnZEGwYPdWL-QiBImGqBUKb78ZOHSplAH__r68sLIw5MimmUBhlj5FN7xBegyDO-s6nryxIRmEDPs5jr9nqzVEbFGMiGmJxeRWlNiSWFiisT559yYHhvHRKmSmcwvSC_oLqWHhvHV0/s320/photo+10.JPG" width="240"></a></div>
<br>
I couldn't have been more surprised when it arrived. Guys, the candle is huge! Way bigger than I expected.<br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil_1fNsngXDBwnA9O_mnt7YqlfLXwBZLvAk1qZaWrH8EiSx0D76CoJK8HhrrjRmeByEkCMJfJ_ndj0NFwYGMExS_2P8ajYuPdrz1oLFXBFNRTQMS5Nd835TJLCae-Z7UaiGaWNWGtgfvI/s1600/photo+9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil_1fNsngXDBwnA9O_mnt7YqlfLXwBZLvAk1qZaWrH8EiSx0D76CoJK8HhrrjRmeByEkCMJfJ_ndj0NFwYGMExS_2P8ajYuPdrz1oLFXBFNRTQMS5Nd835TJLCae-Z7UaiGaWNWGtgfvI/s320/photo+9.JPG" width="240"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's the view from the back. See that little gold spot? Yeah, that's where the ring is. I was so excited to see what kind of ring I got, I lit it right up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOs1sj-Z61x9tjI88KGVzmPLBmwrDVa5qO1l-561vL_c-RHZaRi7uQpLaKNfsMixXexNMRrrdehuO2aQcP7lsWMPCxWzU5vcvugdfXar9Qedrq1ueCI8vrYS7ejuWxWPaxlKVrxwQlWBo/s1600/photo+8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOs1sj-Z61x9tjI88KGVzmPLBmwrDVa5qO1l-561vL_c-RHZaRi7uQpLaKNfsMixXexNMRrrdehuO2aQcP7lsWMPCxWzU5vcvugdfXar9Qedrq1ueCI8vrYS7ejuWxWPaxlKVrxwQlWBo/s320/photo+8.JPG" width="240"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's got a really good wick. I seriously left my candle burning for hours on end, and the wick held up and kept lit the whole time. Usually, when I use candles, they burn themselves out. Not this one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6LDOuxCwWZIKJzlFoNlx8dPTI1iIHZvDQ5buSNB6VLJXCOOKJr5ADWy0wgRJkrgZTbUMp5Kh1cB57axuE0iExAdOhsPeiM8XILuK2iJyoMCG-WizIi_VdXTQoW10lptshgVL5P24iWOo/s1600/photo+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6LDOuxCwWZIKJzlFoNlx8dPTI1iIHZvDQ5buSNB6VLJXCOOKJr5ADWy0wgRJkrgZTbUMp5Kh1cB57axuE0iExAdOhsPeiM8XILuK2iJyoMCG-WizIi_VdXTQoW10lptshgVL5P24iWOo/s320/photo+5.JPG" width="240"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It took about 35 hours of burn time before I got down to the gold packet. Remember how "close" to the top it was? Yeah, 35 hours. This candle lasted a long time! Now, the directions included with the candle for the ring removal are there for your safety. FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS. I didn't. I burned my fingers, ruined a perfectly good pair of scissors, a magic marker, and a pencil. But, I got the ring out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOD1VoyHJnQbiSNOQUb1rlAM7rs76NJm4FV3sM2QWrJadGd0dwR6dxXhmIg3FP4ZtVELIozxSCXShMnAQQ0wr6oE58cg_UM0M7ncn-3cLQLVBKQr4BaAZNdcmsvuNRxv-r0x8WeTnTl-A/s1600/photo4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOD1VoyHJnQbiSNOQUb1rlAM7rs76NJm4FV3sM2QWrJadGd0dwR6dxXhmIg3FP4ZtVELIozxSCXShMnAQQ0wr6oE58cg_UM0M7ncn-3cLQLVBKQr4BaAZNdcmsvuNRxv-r0x8WeTnTl-A/s320/photo4.JPG" width="240"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The ring was wrapped in a sealed ziploc baggie, and then wrapped in foil before being placed in the wax. It came out looking pristine. Isn't it so pretty? I have really fat fingers, so it doesn't fit over my knuckle. I wear it on my right pinkie finger. I love my ring!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

We had 48 people come, and it was amazing!<br />
<br />
We had some great gift bags with patterns and Sprinkles donated by Izzy n Ivy Designs, and a fat quarter donated by Gracie Lou's. Sweetbriar Cove gave everyone a little purse with a chapstick and a piece of chocolate. And everyone got their very own bag of Chex mix to snack on during the retreat.<br />

We had a ton of great prizes donated from local shops and people, too. Home Depot, Velcro, and HouseParty sponsored some of our gift bags, and donated the materials to make a darling little make up organizer out of PVC couplings, Velcro one-strap, and duct tape.<br />

You can get the jars at the Dollar Store. Then, you use a piece of fabric and gather the edges, stuff it, stick in a piece of cardboard, and glue it to the lid.<br />
<br />
Voila! You have a cute little pincushion on the top of your notions jar!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC9OGkzhJ_6671quC047ZlAk5nT3loxGW_gilQ9KBtwc8-t0BxGqcqNmsePpm6L474ueVY-6lyD3PhxmFF9kFXybrCNgVO9FnS1IAoarqyHO3nJMATwhyphenhyphennsQV6elL0IJOefv0eYfAq2Gg/s1600/DSC_1024050813.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC9OGkzhJ_6671quC047ZlAk5nT3loxGW_gilQ9KBtwc8-t0BxGqcqNmsePpm6L474ueVY-6lyD3PhxmFF9kFXybrCNgVO9FnS1IAoarqyHO3nJMATwhyphenhyphennsQV6elL0IJOefv0eYfAq2Gg/s320/DSC_1024050813.jpg" width="320" /></a>Then, tie some ribbon in a bow around the top edge.<br />
<br />
It was darling!<br />
<br />
And super easy! Seriously, with some scrap fabric from your stash, a roll of ribbon, and a jar from the dollar store, this is a cheap enough gift you can make them for all of your sewing/crafting friends for Christmas gifts!<br />
<br />
(Great idea, right? I totally might have to do that!!)<br />
<br />

See how darling they are? I'm still dying over how cute mine is. I think I'm going to fill mine with candies though, because chocolate is a necessity while you're quilting, sewing, or crafting. Right? Right.<br />
<br />

She did a trunk show, showing off some of her favorite quilts they've made at the shop.<br />
<br />
This is one of my favorites. The 18 inch square, sashed. Super easy, super quick, super awesome for using some of those large prints you don't want to cut up into little pieces. I made this one for my mom a few years ago, and it's so quick and easy to do.<br />
<br />
After the trunk show, Carrie taught us how to make yo-yo's without using a yo-yo maker.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfvDADYghfpXVYlEUY1zKkLkC-uypmPZ-9T_LF9Dn_qm02mxzDa8f7oI4mnq_apmG-bI55zHPomikVAlIK5v1CAc4sMw9gQvtXZMjqiJx0V2e1LO6ivZjErKYYfHv42U_VllOP0Y5SQ9U/s1600/DSC_1030050813.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfvDADYghfpXVYlEUY1zKkLkC-uypmPZ-9T_LF9Dn_qm02mxzDa8f7oI4mnq_apmG-bI55zHPomikVAlIK5v1CAc4sMw9gQvtXZMjqiJx0V2e1LO6ivZjErKYYfHv42U_VllOP0Y5SQ9U/s320/DSC_1030050813.jpg" width="320" /></a>It's actually not that hard. Some people turned under the raw edge of the fabric, but I decided not to. I like the look of the unfinished edge. Then, we glued the yo-yo onto the front of the notions jar. Cute, right? SUPER CUTE!<br />

She does some really fun things down at her shop in Payson (<a href="http://www.stitchesandsewforth.com/">Morganson's</a>), like a monthly mystery quilt and a block of the month/every-two-weeks club. So fun!<br />
<br />
I just signed up for August's mystery quilt, and I can't wait to see what it is. Rebecca designs all her patterns, and showed us how to do some fun and different things with fabric to add a little texture to our quilts.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiQ86ZRpzjTDIKsHsu_zg_1LzLRFAxlL6GA1IVX1etXLA88MDmmB0-wXaM_czsPImiMeycdyB-C3Mf5KweSHAIlA_f6Q9vmDyrrCd1xYoY93ZAkZ1vFqM27zj7t-skrA64n707-Ck37lA/s1600/DSC_1034050813.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiQ86ZRpzjTDIKsHsu_zg_1LzLRFAxlL6GA1IVX1etXLA88MDmmB0-wXaM_czsPImiMeycdyB-C3Mf5KweSHAIlA_f6Q9vmDyrrCd1xYoY93ZAkZ1vFqM27zj7t-skrA64n707-Ck37lA/s320/DSC_1034050813.jpg" width="320" /></a>This is one of my favorites that she showed us. In the center it's a Lone Star. And then she just added different borders until it was big enough for her liking. How adorable is it? I mean, seriously. LOVE this quilt.<br />
<br />
After Rebecca spoke, we took a break for lunch. Oh my goodness it was so yummy! Thank you to Zupa's for catering such a spectacular lunch.<br />
<br />

Each lunch box came with the Nuts About Berries salad, the turkey cranberry sandwich, and a chocolate dipped cookie. Oh my!<br />
<br />
I did a little make & take demonstration on how to use washi tape to make a quick and easy card. I didn't take any pictures though, sorry. But let me just tell you, it was cute. I got the idea off of the Silhouette blog. You can find the project instructions <a href="http://blog.silhouetteamerica.com/2013/03/simple-saturdays-small-notecard.html">here</a>.<br />

Angie Stewart did a great little redwork demo. We had a few samples of finished redwork quilts there, and then she gave us all this cute free pattern she found online. Go <a href="http://thepaintedquilt.blogspot.com/2010/07/first-friday-freebie-11.html">here </a>to download your own copy of the pattern. So cute!<br />
<br />
I didn't get much of mine done, but this is one I am definitely going to finish. Someday. I'm adding it to my pile. ;)<br />

We had Lynda Hales come show us some of the fabulous quilts she's made. She loves to do embroidery, and it was really fun to see all of the different things she's made with embroidered blocks.<br />
<br />
I love this one, because it's cute and bright, with simple patchwork. Someday I'll try to do an embroidered quilt top. I don't have the patience, really, but maybe that's why I'll do it. To train myself, yeah?<br />
<br />

She loves circles (and I love to quilt them for her!) This one that she showed was one of my favorites. If you want to see more detailed photos of the quilting, find them <a href="http://designsbylaurajo.blogspot.com/2008/10/circles-and-stars.html">here</a>.<br />

Who knew that if you cut up a zipper you could make a flower pin?<br />
<br />
It was a little tricky at first to get the hang of working with the zipper pieces, but once everything was all glued/sewn together, it actually looked really cute. Mine is a little wonky, but you get the idea. I think I'm going to buy some zippers online and make a whole bunch. Jana showed us an example she had made of the zipper flowers all connected together into a necklace. Cute idea!<br />
<br />
After Jana spoke, we had Keri Carter do a food demonstration. My favorite! She gave us the recipe and showed us how to make her orange dream cupcakes. She even had samples premade for us to taste. They were so flipping good!<br />

After Keri did her demo, Shannon White came and showed us some of the quilts she's made. She is such a talented lady! She teaches classes over at the <a href="http://www.cornwagonquilts.com/">Corn Wagon</a> in Springville. She has made some great quilts and is very talented!<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
After her trunk show, she handed out kits and taught us how to make a quick little pin cushion ring from felt. They were so cute and easy to make. One lesson I learned though, don't hot glue the ring while it's on your finger! OUCH!<br />
<br />
Shannon also showed us some quilts from another lady who works at Corn Wagon. This woman dyes all of their wool, and does amazing, incredible things with wool. I'd love to try something like that, someday. Wool gives a great texture to quilts and looks really fun to work with.<br />
<br />
We had a lot of fun at Quilt Retreat this year (but don't we every year, really?). This coming Saturday is the Salem Days Quilt Show in the trees. I can't wait to see all the fun quilts people bring to show off.<br />

I LOVE this pattern. Adore it!<br />
<br />
It is so quick and easy. The instructions are well written, and there are no pattern pieces to cut out before sewing. Everything is a rectangle, which is my kind of sewing!<br />
<br />
This pattern is great for a variety of fabrics. I've got several for my daughter in a polyester blend fabric, and I've got several that are 100% cotton.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
The pattern itself is well-written and the instructions are very clear and easy to understand.<br />
<br />
There are 5 skirt views. I have made 3 of them. In fact, I made the 3 shown here on this post in under an hour. The green skirt I made first. Then, I made the other two simultaneously. As long as you keep the pieces in the right piles, you can quickly sew multiple skirts at the same time. <br />
<br />
The only change I had to make to this pattern was the elastic measurement was too big. For a size 1 (which is what I made for my daughter) it called for 19 inches of elastic. I ended up cutting 17 inches of elastic and then overlapping the ends within the casing by almost an inch. So, my recommendation for a perfect fit would be to take the waist measurement, subtract an inch, and then overlap almost another inch.<br />
<br />
If you are looking for a quick and easy skirt to make, this pattern is it! My daughter has multiples and wears them all the time. She loves skirts (I love how easy they are to get on and off her little 15 month old self), and these are simple yet girly enough for every day wear, not just as a Sunday outfit.<br />

<br />
So last month the boy needed to have a cardboard box vehicle for the Kindy 500, which is a "tour" of some of America's monuments at the elementary school. I made him this fun red car. He had a blast!<br />

<br />
His sister really likes to play in it, but it doesn't make a good storage box for her toys, so I knew I needed to figure something out. <br />
<br />
I had just picked up a case of paper from Costco, and it was the perfect size for a toy box. And it had a lid!!<br />
<br />
I've been playing with vinyl on my Silhouette Cameo, so I was itching to do something with vinyl and paint!<br />
<br />
I bought a few motifs from the Silhouette store and played around with them in the software until I got the look I wanted.<br />
<br />
Then I cut the shapes out on the vinyl and set them aside. It was now time to get the box ready.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfsFbglvfPd0uSceuRtbsfbaoIPXPTL90lOVbZ86lKNS94JxqvMEIz8MbnqP1D1dYwl25xvkSZWDPxL-I8LfmS3ze1eiZhYyr9nEuD29m1DzDBibdZBFqfiAJF5jsDx-PdpnYOyE8SAQI/s640/blogger-image-966535980.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfsFbglvfPd0uSceuRtbsfbaoIPXPTL90lOVbZ86lKNS94JxqvMEIz8MbnqP1D1dYwl25xvkSZWDPxL-I8LfmS3ze1eiZhYyr9nEuD29m1DzDBibdZBFqfiAJF5jsDx-PdpnYOyE8SAQI/s320/blogger-image-966535980.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I did one coat of primer on the box, laying the spray paint thicker on the printed areas. When that was dry I painted all the areas that would have vinyl applied pink. I used Rustoleum brand. It sprayed really evenly. Tip: it takes a little longer, but spray each side flat, not standing up. That way the paint won't drip and run.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I actually used two coats of pink paint, to make sure it was dark enough. Then I applied the vinyl. After you adhere the vinyl you will want to make sure that the edges are all pressed down firmly. Then I painted over the vinyl in pink to set the edges.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirkKvw1yJf7g47Hguf8wXkJ-8oFyfWNkkexfP-qjRBG87sgBNM6I7k1AQAqObt2fNsO4UcpZxHS4leUyDnVuxrl7Qj75KuDr9Mlo98Ur-gvYqcsrHbJiKhiPK7gp6XAwRpLAbu6dw7Qsg/s640/blogger-image--977964707.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirkKvw1yJf7g47Hguf8wXkJ-8oFyfWNkkexfP-qjRBG87sgBNM6I7k1AQAqObt2fNsO4UcpZxHS4leUyDnVuxrl7Qj75KuDr9Mlo98Ur-gvYqcsrHbJiKhiPK7gp6XAwRpLAbu6dw7Qsg/s320/blogger-image--977964707.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Let that dry, then paint over everything in your top color. I used kind of an aqua blue color. Depending on the color you use, you may needier than one coat for coverage. If you are doing a lighter color on top of a dark, I recommend using a primer in between layers. Since the aqua was darker than the pink I only needed one coat.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Let the paint dry. Then, using tweezers and a hook tool, remove the vinyl pieces. When you peel them off it will reveal the color underneath! It looks really cool.<br />

If you want, you can use a clear coat to finish it off. :) <br />

And there you have it! A personalized toy box for pretty cheap! If you don't have a box from a case of paper, any old box would do. You could cut the flaps off the top of an amazon or other shipping box, too if you want. I'd love to see what you come up with when you do this tutorial! Head on over to my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Designs-by-Laura-Jo/117756434903134">Facebook</a> page and post a photo of your finished personalized toy box!Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-25771648698730398012013-03-29T08:00:00.000-07:002013-03-29T08:00:06.238-07:00Owls!!I love Owls! And I love purple. And I love Chevrons. Which makes this quilt one of my favorites because it combines all three things!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGXSRFwwcehv9OoAp0fUFPQyS9G_Sz2-7gIZg7X31KGoY7hiY3ldaT9yrX56h9D18eyQ9pa_BsmnmTD0gmnSDHfAcI4xadH3gh6Jd3gq3qNJV3xM-jbwybZm1w4cNaOET-_6JrT6o5Q_A/s1600/DSC_0843190213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGXSRFwwcehv9OoAp0fUFPQyS9G_Sz2-7gIZg7X31KGoY7hiY3ldaT9yrX56h9D18eyQ9pa_BsmnmTD0gmnSDHfAcI4xadH3gh6Jd3gq3qNJV3xM-jbwybZm1w4cNaOET-_6JrT6o5Q_A/s320/DSC_0843190213.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
Isn't it darling? I outlined the owls and quilted a pebble design in the background behind them. Then, everywhere else in the center of the quilt I quilted a pointed hook/paisley design (is that what you'd call it? If it has an actual name, let me know so I can stop calling it the Paisley-Hook-thingy Design) :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihssOns5hbCOJo8ZCNPcB8JXq7MnDvA9AkWmukZRG7midp67yg_ioGVzpe3jzj0H1pmNfrXH_KEUxEnlxu3sribLXqDcDx1yga1V81_KShw9B5gIx4RZaS2dgeasYZCH-0o6CYD-cPM0Y/s1600/DSC_0846190213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihssOns5hbCOJo8ZCNPcB8JXq7MnDvA9AkWmukZRG7midp67yg_ioGVzpe3jzj0H1pmNfrXH_KEUxEnlxu3sribLXqDcDx1yga1V81_KShw9B5gIx4RZaS2dgeasYZCH-0o6CYD-cPM0Y/s320/DSC_0846190213.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the inner border at the top and bottom I quilted a tight figure 8, and then I quilted a loose wishbone across the chevron outer border.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used a grey thread which worked really nicely with the purples and greys in the quilt.Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-90711424477775223782013-03-28T08:00:00.000-07:002013-03-28T08:00:00.732-07:00Wool FlowersOn this beautiful quilt with wool applique I quilted feathers (surprise, surprise!) and a lot of modern lines.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg04EWZO3qsK4QFjI6_7CTyNARQSMkJxaFTi8w4Xr2HzwAuYfCJ-_sy8iV9kJ0LchaYuaejKzGQlYodUMw6HMNFVOow8UKZNsiHxgUvsTovBKGLKfq6yoqFFrgDm6l4Ugvo-fBbw03Tmbw/s1600/DSC_0838190213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg04EWZO3qsK4QFjI6_7CTyNARQSMkJxaFTi8w4Xr2HzwAuYfCJ-_sy8iV9kJ0LchaYuaejKzGQlYodUMw6HMNFVOow8UKZNsiHxgUvsTovBKGLKfq6yoqFFrgDm6l4Ugvo-fBbw03Tmbw/s320/DSC_0838190213.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the blocks I did two different designs: Either this one:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi85jJuT0Phk9SSv6o1IFTUZWVaDDGlEo6uHesX7czhlc2QtnuAQokVD5SZzhIuYPGMI086-BZGsH1rtCMYdxw43CUpAsyFfbUs6WVqtu9rOBDo9A2WL2KEp6j2gzBFch2C8-gXbhV4ZVE/s1600/DSC_0839190213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi85jJuT0Phk9SSv6o1IFTUZWVaDDGlEo6uHesX7czhlc2QtnuAQokVD5SZzhIuYPGMI086-BZGsH1rtCMYdxw43CUpAsyFfbUs6WVqtu9rOBDo9A2WL2KEp6j2gzBFch2C8-gXbhV4ZVE/s320/DSC_0839190213.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Or this one: I thought it would be fun to highlight the pinwheel aspect of this block, so I quilted back and forths in half of the triangles to give some texture but also to highlight the pinwheels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_BDN5w_0BJG0CbLeT9Ye_nUzGG6x3cE4pJ-qycHdYBudoK04WkisgkjyQba3jUu3YEsoQu2fEXs1IiDtlQ2ew53y_B4BkI_-OSAybSYVlGzqX_qB_RZ4-iajhT1sImPaRXeBTkcutSKI/s1600/DSC_0840190213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_BDN5w_0BJG0CbLeT9Ye_nUzGG6x3cE4pJ-qycHdYBudoK04WkisgkjyQba3jUu3YEsoQu2fEXs1IiDtlQ2ew53y_B4BkI_-OSAybSYVlGzqX_qB_RZ4-iajhT1sImPaRXeBTkcutSKI/s320/DSC_0840190213.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the background behind the flowers I quilted lines to signify air, and I stitched around the wool applique. You can see in this picture that I quilted feathers in the setting triangles and also in the outer border.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_xzTlAx9HJ33IxTxeRKyHRyb2QT8VUWLUFQPp5yYG7UGmX3pgt6EU0vHi4fV4QTQ1oTx8wUGq05IaeBKCcCZXavbQuItKZx1ennWi5p07mpUppbtGZ12VycONzHSS3oWwTzpfT-cJEaU/s1600/DSC_0841190213.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_xzTlAx9HJ33IxTxeRKyHRyb2QT8VUWLUFQPp5yYG7UGmX3pgt6EU0vHi4fV4QTQ1oTx8wUGq05IaeBKCcCZXavbQuItKZx1ennWi5p07mpUppbtGZ12VycONzHSS3oWwTzpfT-cJEaU/s320/DSC_0841190213.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the corner squares of the quilt I quilted a feathered wreath.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am a nerd. And I love Doctor Who. Especially the 10th Doctor (David Tennant). So, one day when the shop was closed and I ended up spending the day at home with the kids, I decided to make a quick little project to hang by my front door. Yep, there it is. And guess what? I quilted it on my home machine (and oh my gosh was it a pain in the butt!). I also machine bound it. Please pay no attention to the awful machine binding job I did. I really just wanted it to be done. hehehe<br />
<br />
There are currently plans in the works to make a better version of this using the longarm. I'm excited about this. My husband? Not so much. hahaJoannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-66793388246752514032013-03-25T08:00:00.000-07:002013-03-25T08:00:06.577-07:00Chevron QuiltChevrons are the it-thing, and that's good because I LOVE them! This quilt is so fun and I had a blast quilting it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In the pink setting triangles I quilted small circles in varying sizes. Then, in the pink and blue chevron stripes I quilted a large feather.<br />

In the orange/red chevron strips I echoed the seam 1/4 inch inside, and then quilted a back and forth vertical line design.<br />

Here's a view of the back. You can kind of see the difference in quilting between each strip (you might have to click on the photo to make it larger in order to see, but trust me, it's there!) :)Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-2439148868995303492013-03-24T08:00:00.000-07:002013-03-24T08:00:00.587-07:00Wood Grain FlannelThis flannel quilt was so much fun to quilt. It was for a young man from his mother. She left the quilting design up to me. I didn't want to do something typical, like a meander, or stars, or loops. In Angela Walter's book she shows you how to do a wood grain and I thought, "How cool would that look on this masculine flannel?" So I went for it. And it turned out so amazing!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6V8BTnquYK1aw9SDtEs02VbHkOIYUxmmTutcqVyhoyYpsdz0dqaQW16BQzm14oPlItMupvtLwilPMwOtQ2VvB2Z0N-la8tebFvKFEkBqjSgIVwtGVs9xxNNXgsqNyVZ9Q5830CX7BnJA/s1600/DSC_0711070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6V8BTnquYK1aw9SDtEs02VbHkOIYUxmmTutcqVyhoyYpsdz0dqaQW16BQzm14oPlItMupvtLwilPMwOtQ2VvB2Z0N-la8tebFvKFEkBqjSgIVwtGVs9xxNNXgsqNyVZ9Q5830CX7BnJA/s320/DSC_0711070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I threw in some knots every once in a while to give the design a little interest. The whole quilt is quilted in the grain, even over the borders.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0TxzkEpB0zNw2bhetXhF-9V_Xt7D4zj3uB3F97zEKtUu_wfGk3XtUmks0XaloZO1AsfHIUhMTTH1vYgqLM6c9MRovhCIxq8gJbBMzsxYCSPYbouUYG6P1E51ssuWbtYwDQI4AL9r6N4g/s1600/DSC_0712070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0TxzkEpB0zNw2bhetXhF-9V_Xt7D4zj3uB3F97zEKtUu_wfGk3XtUmks0XaloZO1AsfHIUhMTTH1vYgqLM6c9MRovhCIxq8gJbBMzsxYCSPYbouUYG6P1E51ssuWbtYwDQI4AL9r6N4g/s320/DSC_0712070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Here's a closer look at one of the blocks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love the different designs in each of the flags.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHVE-0tNSlfd8SmvxHY7UTQm-KBo6SW681Dibvt9FIjSl4AFv0e-5pQcN2W5444V8a5mgsB_Mt1UXU5aPeNui6GJjBLOMinGJvf4sWoiww2K-zuz9b9QnMPLU44Arf31X-u6ltftYspWY/s1600/DSC_0699070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHVE-0tNSlfd8SmvxHY7UTQm-KBo6SW681Dibvt9FIjSl4AFv0e-5pQcN2W5444V8a5mgsB_Mt1UXU5aPeNui6GJjBLOMinGJvf4sWoiww2K-zuz9b9QnMPLU44Arf31X-u6ltftYspWY/s320/DSC_0699070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I quilted a loose wishbone design in the black border. In the background of the quilt I quilted an all-over, tight meander. And then I stitched in the ditch around each of the flags and did a vertical line design inside.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzNg9mCm_oCdYdRuXPZPsL-qZZoil9XRfKLvB6D47tBheFCpQEWzv6HLdPfwxh4fW4GCVrLoLN2EZhH4USKwRxNANb0TJb6Xl4PTX-oVVeFVu0YxyMkbOIpmbms3SGO2PP9OssWMrh2LY/s1600/DSC_0700070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzNg9mCm_oCdYdRuXPZPsL-qZZoil9XRfKLvB6D47tBheFCpQEWzv6HLdPfwxh4fW4GCVrLoLN2EZhH4USKwRxNANb0TJb6Xl4PTX-oVVeFVu0YxyMkbOIpmbms3SGO2PP9OssWMrh2LY/s320/DSC_0700070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
It gave the quilt some great texture and variety, especially on the back. I love that my client pieced this fun strip of color down the back center.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2eaSf4I-efQT-YHWamkIfhVy5yCPpyPOaqw0HpmoSX6cUlcYso5b2W4MF3LlveK_d0FRmHyQpF_VUEXmIfImetmxL-QIQJ4-8LBtG5mBGzcSAV6TCZ0YPadBcQqP9-_1EYOcpA8_o5xA/s1600/DSC_0695070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2eaSf4I-efQT-YHWamkIfhVy5yCPpyPOaqw0HpmoSX6cUlcYso5b2W4MF3LlveK_d0FRmHyQpF_VUEXmIfImetmxL-QIQJ4-8LBtG5mBGzcSAV6TCZ0YPadBcQqP9-_1EYOcpA8_o5xA/s320/DSC_0695070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I quilted an all-over design across the quilt center with loops, stars, horse shoes, cacti, and cowboy boots. Then in the black sashing around the pin-up blocks I quilted a lasso design. I outlined the pin-up and did a loose meander in the background.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvd1f9VgO79qXWb4LPJVFKRgVT9kb0SjH4vRdkQYru5i3r57UtvXhW6R3EHUDYtRxL_oHyMv1sCLaeqQcPdNQr_XUZc9QP__Nyl2tJ1DmM-d0i8vydMbyeaCqVkyyP-NUaBbSRvAG4iZA/s1600/DSC_0696070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvd1f9VgO79qXWb4LPJVFKRgVT9kb0SjH4vRdkQYru5i3r57UtvXhW6R3EHUDYtRxL_oHyMv1sCLaeqQcPdNQr_XUZc9QP__Nyl2tJ1DmM-d0i8vydMbyeaCqVkyyP-NUaBbSRvAG4iZA/s320/DSC_0696070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the border I quilted it to look like a wood grain. It ended up looking really cool and giving the quilt some awesome texture.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7UXf7Hpzs5P7UQu3UuYfcXevp0ScPdEHKC7oiN9LVYn50IeD7oBU9R_wxFURQrXA6L5Ls9kHzfEyPElkRIonyV7my8EhVm9QkBI-fh2Lp5OBSmG69ZZxRTxaD3xj9SgSG7Qu5mmP85f4/s1600/DSC_0684070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7UXf7Hpzs5P7UQu3UuYfcXevp0ScPdEHKC7oiN9LVYn50IeD7oBU9R_wxFURQrXA6L5Ls9kHzfEyPElkRIonyV7my8EhVm9QkBI-fh2Lp5OBSmG69ZZxRTxaD3xj9SgSG7Qu5mmP85f4/s320/DSC_0684070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
She wanted a custom quilt job, but she didn't want tight quilting either. To achieve this I did a loose figure 8 in the sashing. In each of the blocks I did a Christmas-themed design while keeping the quilting loose.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs-xe1c-l9DP00PnPueXdtsEjcorL9K6ddJ8qkt4xoO5PLS1qi4za-xRmNAgSdNIMfjmqz6GK-oaKsvh629bc3ROrsBK-yPD4d_4fT5DBgLga25KbwNF29HcLHDsgibP-kUE1byPxrjS4/s1600/DSC_0685070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs-xe1c-l9DP00PnPueXdtsEjcorL9K6ddJ8qkt4xoO5PLS1qi4za-xRmNAgSdNIMfjmqz6GK-oaKsvh629bc3ROrsBK-yPD4d_4fT5DBgLga25KbwNF29HcLHDsgibP-kUE1byPxrjS4/s320/DSC_0685070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the wonky stars blocks I quilted a loose loop in the background and stitched in the ditch around the star. In the outer border I quilted a large holly leaf.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyXT0NskYb_zrA7V0tbNb96cWdkw3TfEn9prtK7-DuJk2tW89GHAmtZFb2sWTTRJZT_SrfnP1vgEzx5fCYjra6ze6Ld_l16DOu3mHwEL2ul9CrGhw823gNATeJQFBzwy9zSuQXSpMOrpg/s1600/DSC_0686070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyXT0NskYb_zrA7V0tbNb96cWdkw3TfEn9prtK7-DuJk2tW89GHAmtZFb2sWTTRJZT_SrfnP1vgEzx5fCYjra6ze6Ld_l16DOu3mHwEL2ul9CrGhw823gNATeJQFBzwy9zSuQXSpMOrpg/s320/DSC_0686070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is the view of the back of the quilt. She pieced a block in the center and appliqued on the recipient's first initial.<br />

I'm blogging quilts I did at Christmas time! Woohoo! Who'd have thought it would only take me three months to catch up on the highlights from last year? (Really, I did WAY more quilts than the ones I've blogged, but I used three different cameras and can only find one of the cards, so....)
<br />
<br />
Anyway! This is a fun quilt I quilted for the friend of one of my clients. I just love wonky stars. They are so fun!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ga2I1oUSYBghet5KlbQFLDuFDqjXaF8lVE1YUjwAce94fGafgf9gwhoRR20EEYzvXusQvRzzU6Wo7O5VTqulEGrH2VLnAMUcS6RWNzSKvpsj_tP5OEmVLiRowy2IX1CDxLJqFvrdPfY/s1600/DSC_0679070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ga2I1oUSYBghet5KlbQFLDuFDqjXaF8lVE1YUjwAce94fGafgf9gwhoRR20EEYzvXusQvRzzU6Wo7O5VTqulEGrH2VLnAMUcS6RWNzSKvpsj_tP5OEmVLiRowy2IX1CDxLJqFvrdPfY/s320/DSC_0679070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
She didn't want very tight quilting, but she wanted more custom, so in the sashing between the blocks I quilted a loose figure 8. In the block background I quilted a loose loop, and then I stitched in the ditch around the stars. In the center of the stars I quilted a smaller star.<br />

The outer border I quilted with big leaves of holly. You'll also notice that I attached the binding for her using the longarm. :)<br />

This is a shot from the back. She pieced this fun little block with the recipient's first initial on it. What a cool idea!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhueosQSpXuupDmWq0soq9nbjPKRrw0tyarzEOcjoYeXmBePL8RdsGCU8kFUqdrPvKu6xG2Xt0aCvMDA5CvoVth7vOoBPcHSc9BxvtLXAtyaAQeQ1sr0BxglErcwycm44qxt1HG6EBYJro/s1600/DSC_0682070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhueosQSpXuupDmWq0soq9nbjPKRrw0tyarzEOcjoYeXmBePL8RdsGCU8kFUqdrPvKu6xG2Xt0aCvMDA5CvoVth7vOoBPcHSc9BxvtLXAtyaAQeQ1sr0BxglErcwycm44qxt1HG6EBYJro/s320/DSC_0682070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-36664375375318715052013-03-19T08:00:00.000-07:002013-03-19T08:00:01.055-07:00Boats!One of my clients made this for one of the men in her life (I can't remember if it was for a son, or a grandson). Isn't it so fun? Originally we had talked about doing just an all-over nautical themed design, but the more I got looking at it, the more I knew it needed something a bit more custom. So I called her up and asked her if she was okay with that. She was. *insert giddy giggle here - seriously, it made my day!*<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZUHJVTUFwMVqf48IMx4RqdA4cjIvACj1LtTKDNW56hIXy0E8_N-mKhvJi8XDKHW3TTPTPZV-slz6UYWAxMkLQf_7XjU3ooPUTKbAZGYrcmi3j38MOw2dZVyZJO4lTF5w4_8cx7A3eJF8/s1600/DSC_0674070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZUHJVTUFwMVqf48IMx4RqdA4cjIvACj1LtTKDNW56hIXy0E8_N-mKhvJi8XDKHW3TTPTPZV-slz6UYWAxMkLQf_7XjU3ooPUTKbAZGYrcmi3j38MOw2dZVyZJO4lTF5w4_8cx7A3eJF8/s320/DSC_0674070113.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
So, in the sashing borders I did loops. I stitched in the ditch around the boats. and in the outer borders I did swirls, a loose figure 8, and waves.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNG-g-0SC-P3MV3cBikp_G52MEKzNo3S1bR3B8NH9UDdgVpgB4uNHced9lQjXR14Z2XWjbSgwRv5aULriaVJpJyn8rLzuR0RNR_ADVUXhqe4ZM0TD-Ima-s2tf6kcM4DmEYReSYbOPZic/s1600/DSC_0675070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNG-g-0SC-P3MV3cBikp_G52MEKzNo3S1bR3B8NH9UDdgVpgB4uNHced9lQjXR14Z2XWjbSgwRv5aULriaVJpJyn8rLzuR0RNR_ADVUXhqe4ZM0TD-Ima-s2tf6kcM4DmEYReSYbOPZic/s320/DSC_0675070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the block background I quilted lines to look like wind behind the sails, and swirls to look like water under the boat. Then, I quilted a wood grain on the boat and mast.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6vLDRnenxYArGCIDuAI-OH_dgoZrmOKRqv0PXK_cj4kAI7MhVK7hKX9J5zv3sdTkXcM_ahbHqXrX-7FCdcJ_KwKoYFFy6emzp1nIJCFwuNsJ7rg9yDWe439-unOkGkETMBCCAU4iX12k/s1600/DSC_0676070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6vLDRnenxYArGCIDuAI-OH_dgoZrmOKRqv0PXK_cj4kAI7MhVK7hKX9J5zv3sdTkXcM_ahbHqXrX-7FCdcJ_KwKoYFFy6emzp1nIJCFwuNsJ7rg9yDWe439-unOkGkETMBCCAU4iX12k/s320/DSC_0676070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The boat above is my favorite, but I love this one too. It's just so cute and simple and I love the shape of the sail.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRmdr5-jOLJNFMRxGEhU-RsBXlmTJSYCK3H5019DurJefamqGRnlbH8Dz2xEczeBSUbAvnY8s-XqTgEtTnI8oKbKk21xcreI_N8bwTzzWIJXsjy1PoC4H9khZUR1wYOV0W1GukvYCT2U/s1600/DSC_0677070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRmdr5-jOLJNFMRxGEhU-RsBXlmTJSYCK3H5019DurJefamqGRnlbH8Dz2xEczeBSUbAvnY8s-XqTgEtTnI8oKbKk21xcreI_N8bwTzzWIJXsjy1PoC4H9khZUR1wYOV0W1GukvYCT2U/s320/DSC_0677070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Here's a closer look at the border designs. I used red thread everywhere except in the block backgrounds where I used a blue thread (which was fittingly called Out of the Blue).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love it. The fabric she used is Reunion by Sweetwater.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg40grnccK5EtVDKl51Uot-bG5-XUOuB3_tEusCIVxKanKCVvrW9dX7Kt1xOe2AbMQmg-VKY9_pr4oB5MhwY3i0qXCetvtAvkfXRztLwM3tAffurboc5rhOBN5zxvJbAiRAVuxzGKf7Xo/s1600/DSC_0655070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg40grnccK5EtVDKl51Uot-bG5-XUOuB3_tEusCIVxKanKCVvrW9dX7Kt1xOe2AbMQmg-VKY9_pr4oB5MhwY3i0qXCetvtAvkfXRztLwM3tAffurboc5rhOBN5zxvJbAiRAVuxzGKf7Xo/s320/DSC_0655070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I kind of had fun and went a little crazy....In the pieced blocks I quilted a swirl design. Then, in each of the white sashing strips, I treated them like stairs and stair-stepped loops down each one, so they travel. It looks really cool.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwipKOVjccfWeArHVGxzZd5w6t25Pt2c-SP8NerqrORI9dwF-ROgUlH9l1XaSfYcQJBrIrY1GqVfEC7NaUCiyNGurM-Cvn6RtqUlYUUYitX_JWY4lf_GrAKMzhn5oxXFtFWMQp4LFCxdI/s1600/DSC_0656070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwipKOVjccfWeArHVGxzZd5w6t25Pt2c-SP8NerqrORI9dwF-ROgUlH9l1XaSfYcQJBrIrY1GqVfEC7NaUCiyNGurM-Cvn6RtqUlYUUYitX_JWY4lf_GrAKMzhn5oxXFtFWMQp4LFCxdI/s320/DSC_0656070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I swirled down the inner colored border, and did loops going opposite directions in the white borders around them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifWCzR2LvgJygF9rVqWYh3Z8ShuGBvacQec8kFdJt6Ge43RL5jrOSPIx7CeakYzMAVyLkYtpFI2Z193fTaPbJdOCVWze9wQR_GtzELiAaNWTkyfjdFOjdP6BY0l-t6dl230j9iRP7x7GI/s1600/DSC_0657070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifWCzR2LvgJygF9rVqWYh3Z8ShuGBvacQec8kFdJt6Ge43RL5jrOSPIx7CeakYzMAVyLkYtpFI2Z193fTaPbJdOCVWze9wQR_GtzELiAaNWTkyfjdFOjdP6BY0l-t6dl230j9iRP7x7GI/s320/DSC_0657070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
And because by now you should all know how much I absolutely adore looking at the final quilting from the back...especially when Minkee is involved.... here is the back of the quilt! You can really get a feel for how the stair-stepping sashing design works here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Isn't this such a fun quilt? It's kind of like a strip quilt with attitude. I especially love the giant pink flower.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTW6A9fdjKy7D7i6RxtBHM6ITGqHCDOeimaVpY965bVZ8BplYdkNbJhowHitKqMctGIBO8sZ_THJKwrQ22-USyJ4iX_1AAesU6dUaYLqSPyVke-Z9ty8lNfnd9DZZVYsB4z3uSP4nilro/s1600/DSC_0596070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTW6A9fdjKy7D7i6RxtBHM6ITGqHCDOeimaVpY965bVZ8BplYdkNbJhowHitKqMctGIBO8sZ_THJKwrQ22-USyJ4iX_1AAesU6dUaYLqSPyVke-Z9ty8lNfnd9DZZVYsB4z3uSP4nilro/s320/DSC_0596070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In this one I quilted an all-over floral loop pattern in the strips. In the yellow pieces I quilted squiggly lines. And in the flower I echoed the petal shape inside.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvZZiCw5QuxSiDN0m6lkjySQw3Wlc6pvkwQSsyp6S0PmB8j2fVDOxYWyjBrUf60Uny3Klw_hYG_5GQk7lR1dZq6rDnNeznCEB2ZVD-8aiIFkU9vctyZJURXEqvRIOO9T_BYPKzW1suAjA/s1600/DSC_0597070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvZZiCw5QuxSiDN0m6lkjySQw3Wlc6pvkwQSsyp6S0PmB8j2fVDOxYWyjBrUf60Uny3Klw_hYG_5GQk7lR1dZq6rDnNeznCEB2ZVD-8aiIFkU9vctyZJURXEqvRIOO9T_BYPKzW1suAjA/s320/DSC_0597070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
It looks kind of like a present, don't you think? with the yellow as ribbon and the flower instead of a bow? So cute!Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-42872320155771046322013-03-16T08:00:00.000-07:002013-03-16T08:00:00.131-07:00Young Women Value QuiltI love the different Young Women Value quilts people have been bringing me. This one was so fun to do!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTLsnRK6ag8um07_vXolpwtH4XVdfDx68uyCYxfYCID_gAxePZWcvz9RaroMnBgIifAzwbtUzJEvpu0Wju9p8kxsSsxcmswRWXA94TJJGsT0OIO2uJ1M6tknZrCje3CFG-kxzrRLAtpE0/s1600/DSC_0594070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTLsnRK6ag8um07_vXolpwtH4XVdfDx68uyCYxfYCID_gAxePZWcvz9RaroMnBgIifAzwbtUzJEvpu0Wju9p8kxsSsxcmswRWXA94TJJGsT0OIO2uJ1M6tknZrCje3CFG-kxzrRLAtpE0/s320/DSC_0594070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In this quilt I quilted a meander in the background of the blocks. I stitched around the hexagon flowers and did a little spiral in the center. In the green sashing I did little loopies, and in the outer border I quilted a floral design.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwgwIqWVC-g268VXKdKdaCppWkMevbA8lfRD-YSkC6eGN1_m3JJ54X8XKET1klfN5vmeBcjcWFKhyIibd6laYHuXBNQ961sHfhYiyoJX4cwIRosNbo9c5c-qtoDEVkG7HYTGshRWyM73M/s1600/DSC_0595070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwgwIqWVC-g268VXKdKdaCppWkMevbA8lfRD-YSkC6eGN1_m3JJ54X8XKET1klfN5vmeBcjcWFKhyIibd6laYHuXBNQ961sHfhYiyoJX4cwIRosNbo9c5c-qtoDEVkG7HYTGshRWyM73M/s320/DSC_0595070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In the center quilt I quilted "Young Women Values" in black, and then under each of the flowers I quilted the value name in coordinating thread. Faith is white, so I used black thread on that one as well.<br />
<br />
For a look at another YW value quilt I did, go check it out<a href="http://designsbylaurajo.blogspot.com/2013/01/young-women-values-quilt.html"> here</a>.<br />

<br />
I absolutely ADORE this quilt. Every time I quilt one I remember that I have the baby size sitting on a hanger in line waiting to be quilted for my baby....who is now almost 15 months old. Yep.<br />
<br />
This quilt was sent to me by a gal who found me through<a href="http://lizzyhouse.typepad.com/"> Lizzy House</a>, fabulous designer of beautiful fabric, prints, and quilt patterns (including this quilt pattern). Since I quilted the quilt on the pattern cover she asked me to do hers the same way. Her quilt was a little larger, but oh so beautiful! I did a few things differently on this one. I kept the quilted rings spaced the same: 1 inch apart in the outer ring, 1/2 inch apart in the center. But in each of the colored areas I quilted the back-and-forth pattern (vertical lines) I used a matching thread color. What this means is that in addition to having a color wheel on the front of the quilt, she also had one on the back (she backed it in a bleached white muslin). It looked REALLY cool. I wish I had taken a picture of the back. I totally forgot to do that before I packaged it up and sent it off, and I've been kicking myself ever since. But trust me, it was awesome.<br />
<br />
Also, if you'll notice in the above picture, there is binding attached: She sent over all her scraps to have me make the binding, and I did the binding in a color wheel also, using the fabrics in the same order they were used in the outer color ring of the color wheel. It gave it a really neat look when it was finished.<br />
<br />
I keep toying with different ways to quilt this quilt (on mine, which is still waiting), but I can't think of anything that would look cooler than the echoed rings. It just has an awesome look to it. What do you think? How would you want your color wheel quilted if you were to have one done?Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6478057399484676880.post-90383810860374483652013-03-14T11:00:00.003-07:002013-03-14T11:00:31.187-07:00SwoonSomeday I will actually finish piecing my Swoon quilt (I'm using Parisville by Tula Pink, and it is going to be so pretty I can hardly stand it!), but until then, I'll just quilt other people's tops :)<br />
<br />
Here's one that I quilted for a friend of mine. I love the colors she used. It's so gorgeous!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-cXBbkLSOuIzZeLOhpqr2PkHWfN_mII9QzIJGn4MHchuI-YKXDV0d6V0AXsVG-mSsVj8-iwD0ohW8s4Qt_UZa4PbLBJzKm1zoU0EeFomUT2_C7p6c45xXrQNMLSTrYJMvH7pDvg9hd7Q/s1600/DSC_0587070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-cXBbkLSOuIzZeLOhpqr2PkHWfN_mII9QzIJGn4MHchuI-YKXDV0d6V0AXsVG-mSsVj8-iwD0ohW8s4Qt_UZa4PbLBJzKm1zoU0EeFomUT2_C7p6c45xXrQNMLSTrYJMvH7pDvg9hd7Q/s320/DSC_0587070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I did a lot of feathers. I LOVE feathers (in case I haven't mentioned it before....and in case you couldn't tell).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimoBtpMU_1xJtYw4FONl7qFUU6nV1kAE-gcPFwp9FItc6cwMZd4wxthoUDPJVaKPAATi43WThLgIvi8nMhwEe9Hcbcczs4m46YjH9KuJokJP2crnU0mnuxS4WUjvq7C9MuxN4dmYdgCus/s1600/DSC_0588070113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimoBtpMU_1xJtYw4FONl7qFUU6nV1kAE-gcPFwp9FItc6cwMZd4wxthoUDPJVaKPAATi43WThLgIvi8nMhwEe9Hcbcczs4m46YjH9KuJokJP2crnU0mnuxS4WUjvq7C9MuxN4dmYdgCus/s320/DSC_0588070113.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Feathers in the center of the block. Feathers in the outer ring of the block. Feathers in the sashing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And then I did loops to fill in the little triangles in the background. I love loops too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And because I couldn't get quite the best angle of the blocks with quilting from the front side of the quilt, here's a quick little peek at the back of the quilt. I used white thread, so it shows up so nicely on the dark backing fabric.<br />

Gosh! Just looking at these pictures makes me want to get my blocks out again and start working on them. Maybe this weekend, for National Quilting Day (March 16th). What are you going to work on Saturday?Joannahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01944989665273286235noreply@blogger.com0
